Using commercial outdoor umbrellas at home may be feasible, but you should never think of using the non-commercial grade in your commercial space. That will be too risky a venture. Of course, there is very little difference between the two from outside. Nonetheless, if you look discerningly the difference will be apparent. However, before we go into that let us learn a little about different parts of the umbrella that makes up its ‘skeleton’.

They are as follows:

1. The Poles

You can have one solid pole without any coupling, but most are assembled into two pieces for easy transportation and storage. The former is more suited for commercial purpose.

2. The Ribs

These are the pieces on top of the pole that spread out to support the canopy. Commercial outdoor umbrellas should have their fiberglass ribs to avoid frequent breakage.

3. The Hub

They are mostly two in numbers. The Top Hub is stationery and supports the main rib while the Runner Hub goes up and down the central pole to raise or lower the other ribs.

4. The Cranks, Pulleys, and Pins

These are all different types of opening and closing devices. However, cranks and pulleys are not recommended for use in commercial outdoor umbrellas. The crank may also have a tilt mechanism incorporated in it.

5. Tilt Mechanism

There can be many types of it. Such a mechanism helps to tilt the shade so that it falls where you exactly need it. This too is not recommended for use in commercial outdoor umbrellas.

6. The Finial

It is mainly decorative but also anchors the canopy fabric to the frame.

Therefore, you see that many residents of umbrellas can have many features that are absent in the commercial outdoor umbrellas. Actually, the later is made more with public safety in mind. Of course, it does not mean that the former types of umbrellas are less safe. It only means that these umbrellas are less open to abuse and so can afford to be incorporated with different user-friendly devices. That is all.

Most commercial outdoor umbrellas have a single-piece solid pole. This allows them to withstand not only a strong gust of winds but also the rigors of outdoor application. Remember, there will not only be irresponsible customers to meddle with your umbrella but also remember that in a commercial space, you just cannot close the umbrellas with the hint of a strong wind. Therefore, you have to keep yourself ready for both.

The fiberglass ribs in a commercial umbrella are essential for the same reason too. No, your customers will not interfere with them, but strong gusts of wind will. Generally, ribs tend to fight the wind and break down in the process. Instead, the fiberglass ribs absorb the gust and just bend to let the wind pass. That is the reason why they generally last four to five times longer than other varieties.

Cranks, pullets, and pins, on the other hand, are the victims of irresponsible behavior of some customers. All too often, you will find them operating these devices and these results not only in serious damages to the umbrella but also in collapsing of the umbrella on those sitting under it. Therefore if you buy a market umbrella for your commercial space, make sure that it has that simple manual push up type of operation with pin and hole options.

Now, there is a confusion in the patio umbrella industry itself about this terminology. It is an often-used name, but not many people are aware of its exact scope. Let us accept what majority of them accept as true and that is – those umbrellas that have their pole at the center are called market umbrellas. Some however only refer the wood umbrellas as such while others include all others as well.

Opposed to market umbrellas are the offset or cantilever umbrellas. These are all side post umbrellas fitted with many user-friendly mechanisms. However, these umbrellas too are often used for commercial purpose, especially in clubs and resorts. The main advantage of such umbrellas is that they can provide uninterrupted shade so that one can have an intimate conversation without having the pole coming in between them. However, you must remember all these umbrellas are equally suited for residential use too. In fact, if you have a bunch of adventurous kids, you should opt for commercial outdoor umbrellas for home use too. The operation may be slightly strenuous, but it will have the least chance of collapsing over your head.
